맥아더 장군의 기도 (아버지 기도)

오, 주여!  약할 때 강할 줄 알며 두려울 때 용감할 줄 아는 아들, Build me a son, O Lord, who will be strong enough to know when he is weak, and brave enough to face himself when he is afraid; 

솔직한 패배 가운데서 당당하고 굽히지 않으며 그러나 승리 가운데서는 겸손하고 너그러운 아들을 기르게 하소서. one who will be proud and unbending in honest defeat, and humble and gentle in victory.

자기의 행동을 자기의 소원으로 바꾸지 않는 아들, Build me a son whose wishbone will not be where his backbone should be; 

당신을 알며 또 당신을 아는 것이 지식의 초석이 됨을 아는 아들을 기르게 하소서. a son who will know Thee ?and that to know himself is the foundation stone of knowledge. 

제가 기도하옵나니 그를 편안과 위로의 길로 보내지 마시고 난관과 도전이 있는 긴장과 자극 가운데로 보내시옵소서. Lead him I pray, not in the path of ease and comfort, but under the stress and spur of difficulties and challenge.

여기서 그로 하여금 폭풍 가운데서 설 수 있는 방법을 배우게 하시고  Here let him learn to stand up in the storm; 

여기서 그로 하여금 실패한 자들을 위한 동정을 배우게 하소서. here let him learn compassion for those who fail.

마음이 밝고 목표가 고상한 아들,  Build me a son whose heart will be clear, whose goal will be high; 

남을 다스리기 전에 자신을 다스릴 수 있는 아들, a son who will master himself before he seeks to master other men; 

웃을 줄 알지만 결코 우는 법도 잊지 않는 아들, one who will learn to laugh, yet never forget how to weep; 

미래를 지향 하지만 결코 과거를 잊지 않는 아들을 기르게 하소서 one who will reach into the future, yet never forget the past. . 

결국 이 모든 것들이 그의 것이 되기를 기도하옵나니, And after all these things are his, add, I pray, 

항상 진지하되 결코 너무 진지하게 되지 않도록 충분한 유머를 갖게 하옵소서. enough of a sense of humor, so that he may always be serious, yet never take himself too seriously. . 

그에게 겸손을 베푸사 그가 항상 참된 위대함의 단순성, 참된 지혜의 솔직성 참된 힘의 온유성을 기억하게 하옵소서.  Give him humility, so that he may always remember the simplicity of true greatness,  the open mind of true wisdom, the meekness of true strength. 

그 때에는 그의 아비인 제가 감히 말하겠나이다. ‘내가 헛되이 살지는 않았노라고.  Then, I, his father, will dare to whisper, have not lived in vain.
